Patrick Craven began as a pro-labour, anti-apartheid campaigner in 1960s Britain and went on to spend three decades defending workers' rights in South Africa — first editing Cosatu's magazine, then rising through the federation to become its National Spokesperson and the country's go-to voice on labour matters. His first book opens in the run-up to Cosatu's 11th National Congress in 2012 and follows events through the federation's expulsion of Numsa in 2014 and of its own General Secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, in 2015.
Working from personal recollection, contemporary media coverage and official documents, Craven sets out how the tripartite alliance came apart, and what that breakdown means for the labour movement and for South Africa.
