The narrative poems in Swatland are mostly set in Malmesbury and presented in the language spoken by the coloured community there: Kaaps with the characteristic uvular-r (“bry”) sound. This sound is innovatively represented in written text.

A rugby derby, a cricket match and a visit to the public pool are seen in a new light through surprising comparisons. Social realities are addressed with dark humour and deeply personal issues are touched on without sentimentality.
